City of the Future

Zero waste, zero emissions and completely powered by Mother Nature, the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) is a key element of a multi-billion dollar, multi-faceted response to the global need for alternative energy and sustainability.

MIST is one component of Masdar City, which is being constructed in Abu Dhabi, the capital of United Arab Emirates."The Masdar Institute will turn our vision of a clean energy future into a sustainable reality for the region and the world,” says Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Masdar CEO.

Working alongside the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (ADFEC), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Sun Edison, Leader In Safety provided health and safety expertise for the installation of over 3,300 solar panels that will power the Institute’s energy, science and technologically green community, research and laboratory facilities, residential and retail units, and Masdar's headquarters that occupy 130,000 sq. m., or about 6% of the planned Carbon Free City.

The majority of workers had little to no understanding of health and safety policies so there was a steep learning curve. “There isn’t the same emphasis on health and safety there so we had to change the mindset,” says Leader In Safety’ President, Greg Leader. “Once the workers understood we were looking out for their well-being, they were eager to comply and productivity levels increased.”

The installations occurred at great heights so with the assistance of an interpreter and on-site demonstrations, Leader In Safety trained workers on fall arrest equipment and educated them in fall protection. All 3,300 panels were installed successfully with zero accidents, zero injuries and no lost time due to incidence.

About a 90-minute drive from Dubai, U.A.E., Masdar City is planned to cover 6 sq. km (2.3 sq. mi.) and will be home to about 50,000 people and 1,500 businesses.
Safety Starts at Home

From mineshafts and pipelines to high rises and nuclear reactors, Leader In Safety is bringing its health and safety expertise home.

Currently working in Orillia, Ontario with Mariposa Homes, Leader In Safety is on a residential site providing training, site inspection and audits, ensuring compliance with Provincial and local health and safety regulations.

Retired Ministry of Labour Inspector, Robert Ogden, has worked for Leader In Safety for the past six-years. “His site experience and knowledge of the Health and Safety Act are second to none,” says Leader In Safety’ President, Greg Leader.

On site since the project broke ground, Robert ensures all trade certifications are up to date and provides refresher courses as needed. Fall arrest and WHMIS training has been the most common to date and the health and safety measures in place have paid off.

As with any project, open communication is the key to success. “Old habits are hard to break but the foreman on this project has been receptive to our input. Any potentially dangerous situations have been identified and dealt with immediately,” Ogden reports.

The change in weather has increased safety concerns. In addition to the usual workplace challenges, wet and slippery conditions must be remedied with readily available sand and/or ice melting compounds.

Leader In Safety can make your job site safer for workers, inspectors and visitors, because at the end of the day it’s time to go home.
